A catalytic converter is a mechanism used to decrease the amount of poisonous gas emitted from a combustion engine. Launched in the US in 1975, it is still widely used today but for countries without exhaust prohibitions the converter may not be included to somewhat lower the cost of the vehicle.
Taking a road trip can be a lot of fun, but not if the enjoyment is short lived by loud noises from your muffler. It can cause a horrible ringing in your ears as well as making it difficult to talk to other passengers. Besides the loud noises there are other reasons why it is important to keep your eyes on your muffler and exhaust. Mufflers make it more enjoyable to drive by reducing engine and exhaust noise. If you can suddenly hear the noise of your engine you might have to have your exhaust system checked out. Your muffler is attached to the exhaust pipe and isn’t just in charge of reducing sound but it is also key in keeping deadly gasses out of your car. If you think that you might have a broken muffler, don’t wait too long to get it checked out. Exhaust can enter the car when your muffler is broken. It is important that this isn’t put off. If your car is loud but you find out that your exhaust system isn’t broken, you might just want to look into getting a new muffler anyway. One that will filter out the noise better. A great muffler can make all the difference. You can also get a hole in your muffler that will cause the same loud noise. This can be fixed with a patch if it isn’t too big. Cars that are left in garages for long periods of time can experience major problems with corroding and other muffler problems. Many times when you start driving them again you will have problems with your exhaust and muffler that can result in having to buy another muffler or have other work done on the exhaust. Just because you cannot hear any loud noises doesn’t mean that you don’t have any exhaust problems. Every time you go in for an oil change or other repairs you should have your exhaust checked out. It might only be a leak, but even these shouldn’t be ignored. This can cause carbon monoxide to build up in the passenger compartment. If you live in an area where you experience hard winters or a lot of salt, your muffler and exhaust need to be checked more. The cold weather will leave condensation in the exhaust which never is hot enough to evaporate anything. This causes your exhaust to corrode.
The tail pipe is the end of the exhaust pipe where it vents to open air. When seen from standing point of view, it is the lone visible part of the exhaust system and it usually ends with angled or straight cut. The tip is made of larger pipe than the rest of the exhaust structure to achieve a final cutback in pressure. You may install a fancy tip - to enhance the looks of your vehicle and prevent rusting in that area.
The reason for such short muffler life spans is that on short trips the mufflers and pipes will never get warm never mind hot enough to evaporate moisture in the system - that in the end works to rust out any steel metal components of mufflers and exhaust systems. This moisture not only clings to the metal components and is rust causing by it but wore me highly acidic in nature and most corrosive - mixing with the exhaust gas remnants and left over residuals from the internal combustion engine’s combustion process. As a result the pipes and mufflers are soon corroded and have to be replaced.
