In a survey conducted by JD Power, an American firm which conducts comprehensive annual surveys of car owners to see who is happy, and who is not, with their new car, it was found that "the way in which technology is integrated into new car design, especially interior features and controls, is now considered to be as important to car buyers as defects and malfunctions". Additionally Joe Ivers of JD Power says that "New vehicles today are often packed with new technologies that unfortunately can be complicated and frustrating for the average consumer when their integration is not well executed. This could explain why many car buyers have not been keen in the internal design of the car as opposed to external design.
But while all this technology is great, drivers won’t want it if it ruins the overall look of the interior. Drivers aren’t looking for a million buttons, or on the flip-side, having too few buttons that all have multiple functions, which can get confusing. Driver’s want everything streamlined and presentable, all while being intuitive and easy to use. Ford designers really took these issues and ran with them, designing the whole interior around the SYNC system. The result is one of the industry’s most beautiful and technologically advanced interiors, even rivaling premium brands like BMWs critically acclaimed interior and technology. SYNC gives drivers everything they could ever want or need, all wrapped in a beautiful package that could make luxury car owners jealous. The designing process is divided into three divisions. This entails the need for three types of designers comprising the team: an exterior designer, an interior designer, and a color and trim designer. Some car design teams include a graphic design professional, yet this person’s skill can just be shared among the team members as all may have automotive skill.
Mock-up Mock up is a stage where the actual design along with its selected colors is put into a 3-dimensional model. This model is created using clay by expert professionals who work together with the designer to understand the concept and give it a form and structure. Interior mock up is done using wood, plastic, metal, fabrics, and various other materials to create a complete design model of the car. This also defines the placement of the feature and the spaciousness in the car interior. The process involves a united approach between the car modeler and the car designer.
